Portsmouth Athenaeum Chamber Music Series
This October at Atheneum, Noree Chamber Soloists will present two of the most beloved string quartet repertoire: Mozart’s “Dissonance” String Quartet and Dvorak’s “American” String Quartet. Mozart’s Dissonance Quartet, No. 19 in C Major, K 465, earned its nickname from the unusually slow and chromatic introduction, and is one of the six string quartets dedicated to Joseph Haydn. Dvorak’s String Quartet in F Major, Opus 96 was written during Dvorak’s time in the United States, completed shortly after his New World Symphony. The pentatonic scale that unifies the four movements gives the whole quartet its open, simple character, a quality that is frequently identified with American folk music.
